Trike – Adventure (Tandem level)

Trike “Adventure” is a Tandem level course which is designed for pilots who can successfully pass the final practical tests after completing the Trike “Explore” course. These tests include a few basic manoeuvres that the student will be asked by the Instructor to perform as a prerequisite to enrol for the Trike “Adventure” course. The duration of this course will be 3-4 days, depending on weather conditions. This includes 2 hours of training each day under supervision by an experienced & qualified instructor. During this training you will be flying with your instructor, who will review your practical tandem flying ability & emergency/ instability procedures. Passenger care/attention and various flying techniques /methods while carrying passengers along are demonstrated.

Prerequisite to starting tandem training:

  • Must complete Intermediate training with at least 2 hours of flight as PIC
  • Show at least two successful landings within 25 meter radius of landing spot with engine off
  • Show at least two successful launches independent of Instructor’s assistance

NOTE: Tandem Pilot’s rating/ certification will not be given until the Pilot has completed at least 30 hours and 60 flights in total, logged in their personal pilot’s log book from the time he/ she has completed the Trike “Uncover” training.

To enroll for Trike-Adventure, an individual must:
  • Have completed Trike-Explore course with Certification from our organization or have a similar certification from another recognized training organization with a valid log book.
  • Be able to demonstrate, when asked the necessary tasks that had been taught during Initial course.
  • Meet reasonable fitness standards.
  • Respect the safety rules and Quality standards.
  • Be prepared to sit through the practical and theoretical course consisting of 3 days of theory, practical flying and ground handling.
  • Have a willingness to learn & develop the value of interaction with fellow passengers.

A Brief Overview Of Our Syllabus

    • General re-cap of the Trike “Explore” training.
    • Basic re-cap of launch techniques.
    • Understanding inherent risks involved to pilot and passenger.
    • Familiarization with various protective gears and safety equipment.
    • Assessment of air field, weather and site environment before taking a passenger.
    • Importance of doing a mental revision of the circuit pattern keeping in mind all the necessary aspects of the current situation.
    • Understanding performance limitations.
    • Weight & balance (CG position).
    • Obstruction of view and the related problems.
    • Understanding passenger temperament/ mentality and giving assurance in flight and on ground.
    • General safety precautions (no loose objects, throttle wire distance from propeller, runway clear,etc).
    • Understanding importance of air field management and crowd control.
    • Emergency procedures in case of water landing, tree landing & topple.
    • Preparation of equipment for a tandem flight (trimmer setting, hang point, alternative measures in case of a technical snag etc).
    • Multiple circuits of 20/30 minutes in an open area in wind speeds less than 15kmph. Then climbing to 500 feet, kill engine and landing with engine off.
    • Multiple circuits and low passes into the wind and no lower than 20ft in an open area and wind speeds less than 15kmph. Then climbing to 500 feet, kill engine and landing with engine off.
    • Multiple circuits followed by climbing up to 1500ft, kill engine then perform single 360’s to the left and right figure of 8’s and ’S’ Turns down wind of the landing area, then a spot landing within 25m of a target in an open area in wind speeds less than 15kmph (CFI to brief student on the correct procedures and risks before attempting task).
    • Understanding Wing loading and criticality of G forces.
    • Understanding suitability of canopy and Paramotor for the purpose of tandem flights.
    • Understanding NACA Geometric profile 2412.
    • Landing in mild cross wind conditions (with passenger).
    • Quick descent techniques (with passenger).
      – Big ears
      – Dolphin dive
    • Crabbing (with passenger).
    • A 10km Out and Return Cross Country Flight over an open area in wind speeds of less than 15kmph with Instructor on board (CFI to brief student on the correct procedures and risks before attempting task).
    • A 20km Cross Country Flight, either an Out and Return via at least 3 different turn points or an A to B, over an area with multiple emergency landing options in wind speeds less than 15kmph with Instructor on board (CFI to brief student on the correct procedures and risks before attempting task).

CERTIFICATION

After the completion of this course the student will have to show at least 30 hours & 60 solo flights in total to obtain Tandem Pilot Certificate. These hours must be logged in their personal pilot’s log book from the time he/ she has completed the Trike “Uncover” training. From there on the student will be recognized and certified as a PPG Level 3-Tandem Trike Pilot.

If the student wishes to progress further to become an Asst. Instructor then he/she will need to complete 20 hours and 80 tandem flights logged in their log book, duly signed & certified by an authorized Instructor.
